Canberra is not just public servants and roundabouts! It is a city offering world-class attractions, such as the National Gallery, National Museum of Australia and Questacon, and a unique bush setting that sets us apart from all over capitals.
But it is not just we Canberrans that think this. Canberra was voted 3rd best city in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2018 list …. in the world! (Okay, we were shocked too, but that does not mean Canberra hasn’t got a lot to offer travellers.) Here’s what Lonely Planet said:
“Criminally overlooked Canberra packs a big punch for such a small city. National treasures are found around almost every corner and exciting new boutique precincts have emerged, bulging with gastronomic highlights and cultural must-dos.”
So to introduce visitors to our city, we have lined up a taste-menu of conference social events!
NOTE: Follies and pre-registration drinks are now sold out (venues at capacity)! To meet social demand, we have added Sunday night Karaoke to the mix (thanks Jennifer Kemp!) See details below…
ANZ ACBS Conference 2019 | Social Program
Friday 8th Feb | Casual meet-up Capitol Bar and Grill
7pm | QT Hotel, 1 London Circuit, Canberra
Meet-up at the QT Hotel’s Capitol Bar and Grill for a casual drink and perhaps to make dinner arrangements for the evening. The venue is large, so we suggest you meet at one of the lounge areas on the eastern side of the bar (closest to London Circuit). You should see a wall of artworks of political figures from where you are sitting!
Sat 9th February | Dinner at the CBD Dumpling House
BOOKED OUT! (But you are welcome to come along and try your luck to get a seat on a table nearby!)
7pm | Shop FG13C, 148 Bunda St, Canberra City.
Join us on Saturday night Civic for a dinner and chat at one of Canberra’s most loved Chinese chow downs– The CBD Dumpling House! Pre-pay $20.30 for an online ticket and share a banquet of your favourite dumplings and Chinese dishes with old and new friends from the conference.
Please indicate your preference for a vegetarian option when you purchase the ticket so we can get the ordering just right! If you have further dietary requirements*, you can save yourself a seat at the link below and order and pay for your own food on the night! The menu can be viewed here.
Drinks not included in the banquet (and venue will not split bills) so please bring cash on the night to pay organisers for drinks. Purchase your tickets here.
*If you don’t participate in the banquet as you need to order your own food, you will need to bring cash to pay for both food and drinks as the venue will not split bills. A separate (but nearby) table will be reserved for those buying their own food. (Of course, you are encouraged to move and mix during the night!)
Sunday 10th Feb | Welcome Drinks and Pre-registration
6pm onwards | Hopscotch, 5 Lonsdale Street, Braddon.
BOOKED OUT! VENUE FULL
Join us from 6pm at Hopscotch for drinks, nibbles and an opportunity to register early!

Sunday 10th Feb | ACBS Conference Karaoke
8.30pm – 11.30pm | Soundbox Karaoke Bar, Unit 5/4 Woolley St, Dickson
Whether you are coming down off the weekends pre-con buzz or ramping up for conference fun, join us for the traditional ACBS Conference karaoke night! You have just enough time to polish up those vocal chords for those karaoke classics. Or perhaps you specialise in being an appreciative audience. We are going to put the sparkle back into Canberra’s glittering Sunday nightlife, at the Soundbox Karaoke Bar. https://www.soundboxkaraoke.com.au/
Cost: approx. $10/head + drinks
Transport: It is a 4km Uber ride from Welcome Drinks. We can get groups together and share a ride.
Sign up at the registration desk at the conference so we can get an idea of numbers.
Monday 11th Feb | ‘Bridge to Bridge’ walk
5.45pm | Meet at Mocan and Green Grout, 1/19 Marcus Clarke St
Melissa and Gemma will meet you at the Mocca and Green Grout cafe at 5.45pm. You will walk over the Lake Burley Griffin Bridge and amble past some of Canberra’s key icons – the National Library, Questacon, Old Parliament House, High Court of Australia, National Gallery and Portrait Gallery, across King’s Bridge and past the National Carillon and Blundell’s Cottage before returning back to the starting point.
You should have time to return to your accommodation and grab a bite to eat before making your way to Braddon for the Follies in the evening.
Monday 11th Feb | Follies and DJ CFunc!
7.30pm |Civic Pub, Whiskey Room, 8 Lonsdale St, Braddon.
SOLD OUT! WAIT LIST AVAILABLE!**
Calling all delegates that can laugh at themselves (and others)! Join us for a fun night of skits, laughter and holding ourselves lightly. The 2019 Follies will be hosted by New Zealand’s Belle of Bubbliness, Elizabeth Maher (ACT trainer, therapist) and Sydney’s Jester of Joviality, Jodie Wassner (educational psychologist).
After a few drinks and a laugh, hit the dance floor to groove to the beats of DJ Eric ‘CFunc’ Morris.
Follies tickets are sold out but you can get on the waitlist here https://www.trybooking.com/ZMZU
**The venue is restricted to 65. We apologise to those who have missed out but we did expect only 80-120 attendees (and we have more than 170 so far) so assumed 65 would be a good number for Follies.
