This is a list of ACT Interest Groups that we know of in Australia and New Zealand. They are groups for professionals only. They are not open to interested members of the general public. Their purpose is to serve as a form of ongoing learning and support, and/or peer supervision. If your group is not listed below, please let us know

Current List of New Zealand ACT SIGs

The Dunedin ACT Interest Group.

The Southern ACT Interest Group currently meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 4-5pm (although that time could be extended soon) in Room 9 on the 3rd floor of Wakari Hospital Main Block.  There is a considerable range of training and experience within the group (from none to 10+ years).  The group has only recently re-formed and will include conversations and presentations with the intent of introducing ACT/CBS to new members, experiential exercises, exchange of resources and ideas as well as case discussion.  Practitioners and researchers and students of all levels are welcome.

Wellington ACT Interest Group.

For further information please contact Ben Sedley or Giselle Bahr This group meets on the first Monday of the month, 6- 7pm, in the CBD. Each group begins with a mindfulness exercise and then is followed by a presentation / discussion led by a different volunteer each month. Presentations may be a clinical case or a chapter / concept summary. All welcome regardless of level of training or experience in ACT.

The Auckland ACT Interest Group. 

For contact details contact Richard Whitney at or John Batty at  This group meets once a month on the last Thursday of the month from 4:30 to 6pm.  The location of meetings are at Level 3 in Segar House which is at 126 Khyber Pass Road, Grafton, Auckland.  This group works on a mixture of case presentation, experiential exercises and sharing of resources, experiences etc.  The group is open to all levels of practitioners.

Otautahi ACT Interest Group. 

Contact Kathryn Whitehead at or  ph 03 337 7939. This group meets the last Thursday of each month, at the Mothers and Babies Service at The Princess Margaret Hospital, 91 Cashmere Road, Cashmere, Christchurch NZ. We meet for 1.5 hours, from 3.30pm to 5pm. The group’s focus is on fostering ACT skills, knowledge and capacities in the Otautahi/Christchurch area, with some outreach to the rest of the upper South Island (for yearly study days and visits to our group). The group alternates between a session focussed on experiential practice of a core process/ACT focus and some case supervision, and a more theoretical or research-focussed topic based around a journal paper. Those who are using ACT in some way with their clients, and/or have read several introductory books or attended a workshop, are welcome to join this group.

South Australia

The Adelaide ACT Interest Group.

For details, contact Emma Hanieh at The Adelaide ACT Case Discussion Group Meets monthly on Monday nights (usually the first of the month unless a public holiday) from 5:30-7:30pm in the group room of the Centre for Treatment of Anxiety and Depression at 30 Anderson St Thebarton. The group is hosted by Dr Emma Hanieh and Mr Shane Curley. The group usually employs a workshop format consisting of an opening mindfulness exercise, a discussion of either a video or reading and the second half we split into 3s for experiential role-play. Members of all levels of experience are welcome to attend. We ask you bring with you in mind a client you are working with to role play or if you prefer, you can use your own personal experiences (you do not need to disclose that it is your experiences you are referring to). The remaining dates for 2011 are: August 1st, September 5th, October 10th, November 7th & December 5th.


The Brisbane ACT Interest Group.

For details, contact NeLi (Janelle Louise) Martin at Brisbane meets on the 3rd Tues of every month at Auchenflower and Wilston alternatively. The group is currently working with the 2nd Edition of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy – the Process and Practice of Mindful Change.

The Sunshine Coast ACT Interest Group.

For details, contact Madonna Hirning at Meetings are held on Wednesday nights about every 5 weeks and commences at 7pm. Meetings are held in Marcoola. Sunshine Coast meets every 5 or so weeks on a Wednesday night at 6.50pm for a 7pm start. They are just finishing working through Learning ACT and are looking at moving onto ACT made Simple. They discuss workshops and training people have been to.

The Goldcoast ACT Interest Group.

Logan ACT Interest Group.

The Canberra ACT Interest Group: “ACT in the City”

We have a substantial  lending library, including the classics Learning ACT, Mindfulness for Two and  ACT made Simple.

The Sydney ACT Interest Group.

For details, contact Mary Sawyer at The Sydney ACT interest group meets each 3rd Thursday of the month, 6-8pm at Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick. There is no fee for attendance and we are a friendly bunch and  discuss challenging cases, practice ACT skills, do role plays and discuss research. The group has been going strong since 2003 and  is hosted by Mary Sawyer, any professional is welcome whether a clinician, researcher or manager. All levels of experience are welcome.
